The Doobie Brothers are a legendary American rock band formed in San Jose, California in 1970. Celebrated for their rich vocal harmonies and versatility across rock, folk, R and B, and soul, the band achieved major success throughout the 1970s and have continued to perform for over fifty years. Their most recognized hits include Listen to the Music, Long Train Runnin, China Grove, Black Water, Takin It To the Streets, and What a Fool Believes, many of which remain radio favorites.
The band’s sound evolved from its early rock roots, led by Tom Johnston, to a more soulful direction after Michael McDonald joined in 1975. Over the years, the lineup has featured Patrick Simmons, the only constant member, and instrumentalists such as John McFee. Frequent changes and a brief disbandment in the 1980s did not diminish their impact. The Doobie Brothers have released fourteen studio albums, won multiple Grammy Awards, and sold over forty million records worldwide. Recognized with inductions into both the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, their enduring influence has made them a staple of classic rock.
