Sir James Paul McCartney, born in 1942 in Liverpool, is an English singer, songwriter and musician best known as a founding member of the Beatles. As the band's bassist and a principal songwriter alongside John Lennon, he helped shape popular music with classic songs like Yesterday, Eleanor Rigby, Blackbird and And I Love Her. Noted for his melodic bass playing, wide vocal range and genre versatility, McCartney was instrumental in driving the Beatles' creative evolution, especially from the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band onward. After the Beatles, he formed Wings with his wife Linda, achieving further success in the 1970s with hits such as Band on the Run and Mull of Kintyre. His solo career has also produced major singles, including collaborations with Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. Beyond music, McCartney is active in various charities supporting animal rights, vegetarianism and music education. With more than 100 million records sold and 32 songs topping the Billboard Hot 100, McCartney ranks among the most successful artists in history. His many honours include inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, multiple Grammy Awards and a knighthood. As of 2024, he is one of the world’s wealthiest musicians.
