Fat Freddy's Drop is a seven-piece band from Wellington, New Zealand, blending dub, reggae, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues, and techno influences. Formed in the late 1990s as a jam band by musicians from groups like The Black Seeds and TrinityRoots, they became known for their dynamic, improvised live performances. Their songs evolve on stage before being recorded in the studio.
In 2003, they gained international attention when their single Midnight Marauders found an audience in Germany. They have since toured Europe almost every year. Their debut album, Based on a True Story, made New Zealand music history in 2005 by reaching number one as an independent release, remaining on the charts for over two years, and earning Best Album at the New Zealand Music Awards.
Fat Freddy's Drop remains one of New Zealand’s most successful and influential bands. Founding member Chris Faiumu passed away unexpectedly in July 2025.
