Clannad is an acclaimed Irish band formed in 1970 in Gweedore, County Donegal, by siblings Ciarán, Pól, and Máire (later Moya) Brennan, along with their uncles Noel and Pádraig Duggan. Originally performing traditional Irish folk music, the group gradually incorporated elements of rock, Celtic, new age, smooth jazz, and Gregorian chant, becoming known for their distinctive fusion of sounds and ethereal harmonies.
First known as Clann as Dobhar, they adopted the name Clannad in 1973 and found international success in the early 1980s, particularly with the single Theme from Harry's Game. Their evolving sound helped define the Celtic genre, and their work is credited with popularizing Irish music and the Irish language around the world. Throughout their career, Clannad won numerous awards, including a Grammy and a BAFTA, released fifteen studio albums, and achieved eight UK top 10 albums. With a lineup that sometimes included family members such as Enya, Clannad has left a lasting legacy in world music, remaining most popular abroad while inspiring generations of artists.
