Yusuf Islam, born Steven Demetre Georgiou in 1948, is a British singer-songwriter known by the stage names Cat Stevens, Yusuf, and Yusuf / Cat Stevens. Blending folk, rock, pop, and later Islamic music, he has sold over 100 million records and achieved more than two billion streams worldwide. Rising to fame in the late 1960s, Cat Stevens scored early UK hits with Matthew and Son, followed by classic albums like Tea for the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat, which became triple platinum in the US. Catch Bull at Four topped the US charts, and his songwriting has earned awards for enduring hits such as The First Cut Is the Deepest, Father and Son, Wild World, Moonshadow, Peace Train, and Morning Has Broken. After converting to Islam in 1977 and changing his name, Yusuf stepped back from popular music for two decades to focus on education and philanthropy. He returned to secular music in 2006 with the album An Other Cup, and has continued to record and tour internationally under various versions of his stage name. Yusuf was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 and has been recognized with humanitarian awards for his advocacy of peace. His later work includes albums such as Roadsinger, Tell 'Em I'm Gone, The Laughing Apple, Tea for the Tillerman 2, and King of a Land.
