America is a British-American rock band formed in London in 1970 by Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek, and Gerry Beckley, all sons of US Air Force personnel stationed in England. Known for their smooth vocal harmonies and acoustic folk rock sound, the group gained major success in the 1970s with hits like A Horse with No Name, I Need You, Ventura Highway, Tin Man, and Sister Golden Hair. Their debut album and the follow-up Homecoming were both critically and commercially successful, and their compilation History America's Greatest Hits became a multi-platinum release. After Dan Peek left in 1977, the band had fewer charting singles but returned to the top ten with You Can Do Magic in 1982. America won a Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1973 and has been recognized with induction into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The group continues to tour and record, remaining an influential name in soft rock.
