After Clarke's departure following their 1981 debut album Speak and Spell, the band evolved as Gore took over songwriting and Alan Wilder joined, defining their classic sound throughout the 1980s and early 1990s with albums like Black Celebration, Music for the Masses, and Violator. Known for shaping the synth-pop and alternative music landscape, Depeche Mode achieved major international success with hits and acclaimed tours, including a milestone concert at Pasadena Rose Bowl in 1988.
