The National is an American rock band formed in Brooklyn, New York in 1999, with roots in Cincinnati, Ohio. The lineup features vocalist Matt Berninger, twin brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner on guitars and keyboards, and brothers Scott and Bryan Devendorf on bass and drums. Longtime touring members Ben Lanz and Kyle Resnick join them live. While Carin Besser, Berninger’s wife, is not a band member, she has contributed lyrics since the 2007 album Boxer.
The band debuted with their self-titled album in 2001 and gained wider acclaim with Alligator in 2005. Subsequent releases like Boxer, High Violet, and Trouble Will Find Me established them as leading figures in indie rock, earning both Grammy nominations and critical praise. Sleep Well Beast won them a Grammy Award in 2018. Known for their emotionally resonant sound and intricate arrangements, The National has collaborated with artists like Taylor Swift, Phoebe Bridgers, and Sufjan Stevens on their recent album First Two Pages of Frankenstein, which topped Billboard’s AAA and Rock charts in 2023. That same year, they released a surprise album, Laugh Track. Several of their albums have been recognized among the greatest of all time by NME.
