The Mars Volta

The Mars Volta

The Mars Volta is an American rock band formed in 2001 by guitarist-producer Omar Rodríguez-López and vocalist-lyricist Cedric Bixler-Zavala, both known for their intense creativity and experimental approach. Renowned for electrifying live performances and ambitious concept albums, the band quickly distinguished itself after the break-up of the duo’s former group, At the Drive-In. Their early releases, including the critically acclaimed debut De-Loused in the Comatorium, showcased a blend of progressive rock, psychedelia, and Latin influences, setting them apart in the rock landscape. The Mars Volta reached commercial heights with Frances the Mute, which debuted in the top five on the US charts and earned Gold status. Over the years, their lineup has featured talented musicians such as Eva Gardner on bass, Marcel Rodríguez-López on keyboards and percussion, and notable collaborators like Flea and Juan Alderete. After a hiatus and brief breakup in the 2010s, the group reunited, continuing to evolve their sound. The current lineup features original members Rodríguez-López, Bixler-Zavala, Gardner, and Marcel Rodríguez-López, along with pianist Leo Genovese and drummer Linda-Philomène Tsoungui. The band continues to release new music, most recently with their ninth album, Lucro Sucio; Los Ojos del Vacio. The Mars Volta remain celebrated for their fearless experimentation and boundary-pushing artistry.
